Oracle and ServiceNow now let employees work from ChatGPT. Both keep the authority to act for themselves

Oracle's Fusion Companion and ServiceNow's ChatGPT plugin move the conversation to OpenAI while approvals, permissions and the record stay in the system of record. Design the join between them.

Two of the largest enterprise systems of record spent this week inviting employees to work from inside ChatGPT. Both were careful to say that ChatGPT would not be the one doing the work that an auditor cares about.

On October 26, Oracle announced Fusion Companion, a layer that interprets a business objective and coordinates the transactions, workflows, approvals and agents needed to reach it across Oracle Fusion Applications. People can reach it through supported AI tools “such as ChatGPT,” through interfaces built by customers or partners, or through a new native experience called Fusion Agentic Home. Two days later, ServiceNow released an MCP plugin for ChatGPT, available now in OpenAI’s marketplace, that lets an employee move from a question to an action in the same conversation: find similar incidents, assess the risk of a change, update the record.

The wording of both announcements points the same way. Oracle says Fusion Companion works within the user’s permissions and escalates decisions that need human judgment. ServiceNow says, more bluntly, that it “remains the system that executes and governs actions,” with the permissions and approvals the organization requires.

Holds the authority

La Madre's reading of both announcements. The middle zone is where audits will look.

This is the pattern we described when we argued that reasoning is becoming portable while the authority to commit a transaction is not. Workday made the same choice for its headless agents. Oracle and ServiceNow now confirm it from the two biggest back offices in most large companies: finance, procurement and HR on one side, IT and employee service on the other.

Read the status before the demo

The two announcements are at different stages, and roadmaps tend to blur in sales presentations.

  • ServiceNow’s ChatGPT plugin is available now. Enhanced plugin capabilities are planned for the end of 2026, richer interactive extensions are planned as a preview, OpenAI-powered security capabilities are scheduled for early access in January 2027 and general availability in the second quarter, and Codex inside ServiceNow’s AI Workflow Factory is planned for 2027.
  • Oracle’s Fusion Companion and Agentic Home were announced without an availability date in the release. Treat them as direction until Oracle publishes which transactions, modules and AI clients are supported.

What the join needs

When the conversation and the transaction live in different systems, three questions decide whether the result is defensible.

Is it the same person on both sides? The user signed in to ChatGPT must map to the same identity in Oracle or ServiceNow, and the action must run with that person’s permissions, never with a shared integration account. Ask how the plugin authenticates and whether a service identity appears anywhere in the chain.

Can you connect the conversation to the record? The system of record logs the update; ChatGPT holds the reasoning that led to it. An investigator will want both. Check whether the transaction carries a reference back to the conversation, and whether your ChatGPT workspace retains that conversation for as long as the transaction’s records policy requires.

What happens to what the user saw? A summary of incidents or invoices in ChatGPT is data leaving the system of record. That is fine when the workspace terms, retention and region are approved for it, and a problem when nobody checked.

The commercial contest is easy to see: OpenAI wants to be where employees start their work, and Oracle and ServiceNow want to remain where work becomes official. For architecture teams, the useful part is that both vendors drew the line in the same place. Put your controls on that line.
